Taberna Portuense

Tonight we had dinner at Tabarna Portuense. A small but nice restaurant just at the outskirts of the old town. We eyed this place as I noticed they served BBQ Ribs and was curious at how they'd be. Firstly, we ordered Croquetes de alheira as a starter to share, something small but to start off the night. I must say that they were to die for, and the sauce tasted beautifully. Almost like a honey mustard vinegarette, though I'm not totally sure what it is - it was just wonderful. Then for mains, of course, the BBQ Ribs (and a side of fries) and the Duck Rice. As regards to Duck Rice, it tasted really nicely. The rice was seasoned in a really nice way, and the Duck pieces were also tasty and plentiful. As regards to the BBQ Ribs, the meat was falling off the bone, and tasted magnificently. Best of all, super affordable and we'll priced. Quite a steal, considering the quality of the food! Recommended!

Lovely place, so cheap and great food. They were under staffed hence why i marked them down, was waiting a long time for food and general service lacking. Menu was a little confusing, ended up ordering way too much food, starters are pretty big enough. Definitely worth a visit, eat early!

First time ever leaving a review. Never thought I would, but this time I felt like I had to. I’m not sure why there isn’t a line out the door. The mussels here, are the single best mussel dish I’ve had in my life. Just a very deep and rich flavor profile, something that’s hard to do well. And the same goes for the sausage. If your in Madeira and don’t go here, your doing yourself a disservice.

We went here right at opening times for dinner. The restaurant was a bit understaffed and the toiletts hadn't been cleaned since the day before. But the food was excellent, sharing plates came one after the other and all were fille with delicious portugese meals.

Stumbled upon this place and knew instantly that it was the the perfect vibe for dinner in Madeira (I.e. not a tourist trap, good value for money, and actually decent food). Went for the Francesinha completa (with eggs and chips) and it was delicious. My friend went for the salted cod, eggs, and fries, which was equally tasty. Friendly service, and a really chilled atmosphere that makes you feel like a local. Would highly recommend as a lunch/dinner spot when in Funchal!
